Washington State Declares September ‘Eat Local Month’

Washington’s farmers, ranchers, fishermen, harvesters and makers will get some well-deserved recognition. We’re thrilled to present this official proclamation from the Governor’s office:

The Proclamation reads:

THE STATE OF WASHINGTON
Proclamation

WHEREAS, the state of Washington is home to a diverse and vibrant community of farmers, fishermen and food producers who provide fresh, healthy and sustainably-produced food to residents and visitors; and

WHEREAS, recognizing the contributions of these hardworking individuals highlights the importance of supporting local agriculture, fisheries and food production to strengthen our economy, preserve our environment and ensure food security; and

WHEREAS, Eat Local Month celebrates the bounty of Washington’s local food system with events throughout the state, including Whatcom County, the Olympic Peninsula and Whidbey Island, fostering a sense of community and connection between consumers and local food producers; and

WHEREAS, participation in Eat Local Month supports local businesses, encourages healthier eating habits, reduces carbon footprints, and promotes the preservation of farmland and fishing waters; and

WHEREAS, events featured across the state of Washington showcase the rich agricultural heritage of our state and provide opportunities for education, engagement and enjoyment of locally-sourced foods;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jay Inslee, governor of the state of Washington, do hereby proclaim September 2024 as

Eat Local Month

in Washington, and I urge all people in our state to join me in this special observance.
