About Us
The Broken Shovel Kiwi Farm was started in 2011 on a 1/2 acre lot in Burien, with 59 hardy kiwi vines (involving seven different varieties). The Mossyrock location was added in 2016, with 140 younger vines now growing there (making for a total of 199 hardy kiwi vines, and nine different varieties on the two properties). The incentive for starting this farm was the discovery that various studies have determined that kiwis are "the most nutrient dense of all the most commonly consumed fruits" in the world. This was followed by the discovery that there were only a handful of small farms in the United States growing hardy kiwis, and fresh hardy kiwis were, for all practical purposes, almost impossible to find in the State of Washington. So, as they say, one thing led to another, and while there are an increasing number of growers of hardy kiwis in Washington and Oregon, Broken Shovel Kiwi Farm continues to be unique in picking and selling their different hardy kiwi varieties only after they've ripened and reached their full level of sweetness and taste. Enjoy.
