Skagit Water Weeks Celebration

May 25, 2022 @ 3:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Celebrate and learn more about how clean water contributes to so many elements of our lives.

This is a kid-friendly event with arts and crafts, sea creature touch tanks, presentations, and samples of oyster shell vodka and Gose beer made with salt from the Salish sea.

Event begins at 3:30pm.

Presentations in Terramar Slough Room start at 6:00pm.

Event ends at 7:30pm.

Greg Spore, head brewer at Terramar, will speak about the making of Octopus Garden Gose: including the importance of water quality and clean water in the beer making process, and sourcing the kelp infused sea salt harvested in the Puget Sound.

Samples and sales of Octopus Garden Gose will be available (to those over 21).

Bill Dewey, Director of Public Affairs at Taylor Shellfish Farms will speak to the importance of clean water in Samish bay to oyster farming, including the environmental impacts water has on oyster farming.

Watch the staff of Taylor Shellfish Shuck Raw Oysters! Oysters on the Half Shell & Baked Oysters will be for sale.

Terramar’s Oyster Shell-infused vodka will be for sale as well.

The Northwest Straits Commission will discuss the highly invasive European green crab (Carcinus maenas), which was first discovered in Padilla Bay (2016) and can decimate shellfish populations, displace native crabs, and damage eelgrass and salt marsh habitats. Their discussion will cover the collaborative trapping efforts to remove green crabs from intertidal areas of Samish Bay, Padilla Bay, and Fidalgo Bay.

Padilla Bay National Estuarine Research, near Bay View State Park, study this important estuary, its extensive eelgrass meadow, and the many animals that live there. Education staff from the reserve will be sharing animals from their touch tanks, including sea stars, crabs, and other cool estuary animals.

Sophie Cortes, Terramar employee and indigenous artist will create all natural dyes sourced from local water, food scraps and natural resources and then offer a hands-on event where kids or adult kids can make their own tie dye bandana (for a small fee that will go toward donation).

– Kids coloring contest with water themed pictures illustrated by employee and artist, Sarah Bock.

– Make your own fish print impressions with Fish Printing Replicas donated for the event by MoNA (Museum of Northwest Art; La Conner).
