Foundations Of Seed Saving

July 21 @ 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

This hands on workshop will focus on the fundamental concepts that underpin garden and small scale seed saving and plant breeding. First, we will talk about WHY it is important to save seeds. Then we discuss pollination, fertilization and how seeds come to be. We will learn taxonomy and plant family relationships and why these are important to the seed saver. Beginners are welcome. If you want to know more about saving seeds in your garden or farm then this is the workshop for you. There will be pictures, be charts, plants, flowers, and story sharing.

The hands on portion of this workshop will be seed harvesting. I will discuss and demonstrate saving seeds from wet seeded crops as we harvest tomatoes for seed. Tomatoes are one of the best plants to start with as saving and replanting your own seed will quickly result in climate adaptations, earlier ripening and better overall health. I will demonstrate the harvest and fermentation process needed to save seeds from tomatoes. Take tomato seeds home or bring some from your garden to save!

All workshops take place at Wild Dreams Farm and Seed and include a farm grown lunch, tea, and a farm tour.

Cost: $40

As part of our commitment to inclusivity and equity we offer BIPOC scholarships for each workshop. There is no application- only a desire to attend. Please email jennifer@ wilddreamsfarm.org to claim your spot.

About Me, Jen Williams:

I am the steward of Wild Dreams Farm and Seed. I have been growing food, flowers and medicines on this land for over 20 years. I am passionate about connecting to the Earth through plants and seeds. I have taught children and adults in outdoor learning experiences for over 10 years at the Vashon Wilderness Program, Family Link program, and various on farm workshops.

I teach and explain what I have learned about seed saving based on my direct experience and relationship with the plants, the words and experiences of my many Seed mentors, and my reading about this ancient art form. I am always happy to answer questions on other seed related topics so bring your curiosity!
