Eat Local! a 3-part campaign to encourage eating locally

July 11, 2021 @ 7:00 PM - July 17, 2021 @ 8:00 PM

The Eat Local! Campaign is the project of the Salish Sea Regional Hub and Transition Lopez Island, offering three separate weeks this summer to the wider community to experience different aspects of what eating locally is all about.  The inaugural week, July 11-17th, will focus on “Exploring,” a week in August on “Sharing,” and one in September on “Preserving.”  The elements of local eating will be broken down to their most basic components to encourage beginners to taste what their community offers.

On July 11th, 7-8pm, the Eat Local! Campaign kicks off with a Zoom presentation exploring of why eating locally and seasonally is the right choice and how to launch the adventure.  This regional session will be facilitated by local author and innovator, Vicki Robin to discuss “why eat local?” and “what does local mean?”  Vicki has written extensively on the subject with her book “Blessing the Hands that Feed Us” and successfully challenged herself to eat 90% of her food grown within ten miles of her home.
Throughout this first week, participants are urged to select one food (or more) and commit to sourcing it locally this week and beyond, explore where you can find this food locally (grow it yourself, farm stands, local markets, farmers markets) and to find multiple ways to incorporate it into your weekly menu.

Additional features of the campaign include the food book Eating Locally and Seasonally: A Food Book for Lopez Island (and All Those Who Want to Eat Well) by Henning Sehmsdorf and Elizabeth Simpson (available for purchase in book form or as a free download) and their accompanying YouTube videos, short pieces by other farmers and local celebrity chefs, potlucks, contests and prizes, and group sessions on food preservation.
