Community-led Workshop: Herbal Infusions and Cold-Processed Soapmaking

May 12 @ 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM

$75.00

This class is designed to teach students how to make cold-processed soap by hand at home. We talk about herbal infusions to create medicinal bars, lye safety, recipe measurements, natural colorants, using animal fats/food sources (juice, honey), slicing, curing and packaging. Students will see all the products used, compare supplies and where to source, and cut / bevel their own bars of soap. With the nature and safety of soap in a large classroom, we’ll do a demonstration-style class. Folks will watch the process as we go through the process, from warming the oils and making the lye solution, to adding colors and pouring the batch.
Cold-processed soap dates back thousands of years, recorded as using ash, animal fat, water, and potassium hydroxide (an alkali similar to lye). We’re bringing organic soap back to its roots, without any fragrance oils, chemical extracts, or palm oil.

Everyone will take home a bar of Sonder Farmstead soap and their record-keeping worksheet. All ages, experience, and abilities are welcome!

Em started Sonder Farmstead at Cloud Mountain’s incubator program in the spring of 2022. Operating on just a half acre, the farm is a colorful balance of naturally grown produce and herbal medicine, grown to sell at local farmer’s markets and be infused into our cold-processed soaps. Em is on a mission to get locally grown and made skincare into the community.
